Flying with Children?

We make family travel a breeze!

Infant Travel Guidelines (Under 2 Years)

Proof of Age for Infants
Infants under 2 years old must provide proof of age, ideally in the form of a birth certificate. Children under 2 years old are considered infants and can travel as lap-held infants with an adult (18 years or older) without purchasing a separate seat.

Additional Luggage for Infants
Parents travelling with infants can bring one diaper bag (size and weight equivalent to a personal item) free of charge, in addition to their regular free personal item. You can also check two complimentary items such as a stroller, car seat, or playpen.

Lap-Held Infant Travel Requirements
Infants travelling as lap-held must remain in the accompanying adult's lap throughout the flight. The adult must hold the infant during taxi, takeoff, and landing, while the seatbelt sign is illuminated, and when instructed by the flight crew.

Purchasing a Seat for an Infant
If you prefer a separate seat for your infant, you can purchase a seat at the regular fare. In this case, the infant must be secured in an approved restraint device (see below for approved devices). Infants secured in a car seat must be seated next to their parent or guardian (18 years or older). Note that infants cannot occupy certain seats on the aircraft.

Single Passenger Responsibility
No passenger can be responsible for more than one infant, whether the infant is on their lap or has their own seat.

Infant Fare for International Travel
When travelling internationally (e.g., flights to/from Mexico), an infant fare will be added, calculated as 20% of the adult base fare.

Children Travel Guidelines (Ages 2-12)

Child Travel Requirements
Children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older. Children aged 2 years and older require their own seat and may not travel on a lap. Minors under 12 years are encouraged to carry identification such as a passport, an original birth certificate, or a non-government photo ID (e.g., a student card).

Young travellers (Ages 12-17)

Unaccompanied Minor Policy
Young travellers between 12 and 17 years old may travel unaccompanied, but ONLY on nonstop flights (direct flights without stops). Flights with layovers are not permitted for unaccompanied minors.

Booking for Unaccompanied Minors
Young travellers aged 12-17 travelling alone on nonstop flights will be considered adults for booking purposes.

Travelling with Children to/from the U.S., Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica

U.S. Travel for Young Travellers
Young travellers between the ages of 16 and 17 years may travel unaccompanied, but ONLY on nonstop flights. Flights with a stop en route are not permitted for unaccompanied minors.

Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica Travel
Young travellers between the ages of 2 and 17 years will be considered children for air travel purposes. They will pay the child fare when travelling with a ticketed adult (18 years or older). The accompanying adult must supervise these minors throughout the trip.

Children travelling with One Parent

If you're travelling with only one adult, consult the Government of Canada Travel Guidelines for additional documentation that may be requested by Flair or airport security.

Minors Travelling Internationally

Passport Requirements for Minors
All minors (infants and children) must have a valid passport issued by a sovereign nation to travel internationally. In some cases, the accompanying adult may need to provide additional documentation, including:

  • Legal custody documents
  • Parental consent letter authorizing travel
  • Death certificate if one parent is deceased

Expecting and New Mothers: Travel Guidelines

Expecting Mothers with a Healthy Pregnancy
Expectant mothers with a complication-free pregnancy may travel up to the 32nd week without a medical certificate.

Medical Certificate for Pregnant Women Beyond 32 Weeks
Pregnant women at or beyond the 32nd week of pregnancy must present a medical certificate dated within 72 hours of the scheduled departure. The certificate must confirm that the physician has examined the patient and found her physically fit for air travel. The estimated date of birth must also be included.

Safety Tips for Expecting Mothers
For safety, we recommend that expectant mothers keep their seatbelts fastened at all times while seated. The seatbelt should be placed under the belly, low on the hips. Seatbelt extenders are available upon request.

New Mothers
Mothers who have given birth within seven days of flying should consult their medical professional before travelling.
