Baggage for Children & Infants

What can you bring for your little traveller?

Baggage for Children and Infants

Here’s everything you need to know about packing baby essentials for your trip with us. We’re here to make your journey stress-free!

What You Can Bring for Your Infant:

Baby Food & Drinks: If you’re travelling with an infant under two years old (0-24 months), you can bring baby food, milk, liquid formula, water, and juice in your carry-on baggage, even if they exceed the 100 ml limit. These items are exempt from liquid restrictions.

Baby Items: You can also pack other baby essentials, such as diapers and wipes.

A diaper bag must be the same size and weight as a personal item:

  • 15 cm x 33 cm x 43 cm (6 in x 13 in x 17 in)
  • 7 kg (15.5 lb)

Important Restrictions to Know:

  • Powders & Granular Materials: Certain powders and granular materials (like baby powder or inorganic baby formula) are allowed in carry-on baggage but must be limited to 350 ml or less. Tip: CATSA recommends avoiding metal-lined containers for powdered formula to make screening easier.
  • Gel & Ice Packs: Gel and ice packs are allowed if they’re used to refrigerate your baby’s food, milk, breast milk, liquid formula, water, or juice.
  • Breast Milk: You can bring breast milk in quantities greater than 100 ml, whether travelling with or without your child. Be sure to present it for inspection at security.

Easy Access for Screening:

When packing exempted liquids like medications, baby formula, or breast milk, make sure they are packed in a way that allows easy access for screening. We recommend labelling these items with the manufacturer's name or a pharmaceutical label to streamline the inspection process.

Toys & Snacks:

  • Toys: Pack your child’s favourite toys in the carry-on, but avoid toys that resemble weapons (e.g., water guns and toy grenades).
  • Snacks: Solid foods, such as apples, granola bars, and sandwiches, are allowed in your carry-on for inflight snacking. For more information on travelling with food, check out our Special Items Page.

Car Seats & Restraint Systems

Transport Canada regulations regarding acceptable child restraint devices apply to all Flair flights.

We do not provide car seats. If you want to use an infant's car seat, the seat type should be noted when booking.

Only car seats labelled as follows may be used on Flair aircraft:

  • Canadian manufactured systems: A “statement of compliance” label must be affixed, stating that the car seat has been certified to the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 213 or 213.1 and indicating the date of manufacture after January 1, 1981.
  • American manufactured systems: For systems manufactured to American standards between January 1, 1981, and February 25, 1985, a label must be affixed stating: “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards” (FMVSS). For systems manufactured after February 26, 1985, two labels are required: 1) “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable FMVSS” and 2) “CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” in red lettering.

The following types of car seats may be used:

  • Rear-facing car seats: Rear-facing infant car seats are generally restricted to infants weighing less than 9 kg/20 lbs, though weight restrictions are specified on the system and can vary from one system to another. Infant car seats must be certified to CMVSS 213.1 and must always remain secured.
  • Forward-facing car seats: Forward-facing child car seats are generally restricted to children weighing between 9 and 18 kg (20 and 40 lbs), though weight restrictions are specified on the seat and can vary from one seat to another. Child car seats must be certified to CMVSS 213.
  • Convertible (forward or rear-facing) car seats: Manufacturers often use the term “convertible” to describe car seats that can be used as rear-facing for an infant or forward-facing for a child. These car seats will be accepted when certified to CMVSS 213 and CMVSS 213.1.
  • Combination car seats: A combination car seat, consisting of a combined child car seat and booster cushion, will be labelled as both CMVSS 213 and CMVSS 213.2. These systems may only be used on board when the internal five-point harness system is installed (CMVSS 213). The combination car seat with CMVSS 213.2, when not using the internal five-point harness, is classified as a booster seat and is not approved for use on board the aircraft.
  • AmSafe Child Aviation Restraint System “CARES™”: The AmSafe child aviation restraint system “CARES™” may be an alternative to a car seat on the aircraft. It has a harness and buckle device that attaches directly to the aircraft seat and is restricted for use by children from at least one year to four years of age, weighing between 22-44 lbs (approximately 9.9-19.9 kg) and up to 40 inches (approximately 101 cm) in height. The occupant must be in their seat.
  • The following infant restraints are not permitted: Booster cushions, booster seats (including the combination restraint system CMVSS 213.2 when used without the five-point harness), belly or loop belts, infant carriers (such as Snugli®), or baby hammocks (such as FlyeBaby).
